Program Overview
The Ignite Detroit Contractors Program is a targeted business development initiative designed to support early-stage construction contractors in the Detroit area. The program is powered by the Gilbert Family Foundation (GFF) and focuses on helping contractors build strong, sustainable businesses within Detroit’s construction industry.
Ignite was created to address the financial, operational, and systemic barriers that often prevent early-stage contractors from moving beyond the startup phase. Many contractors operate informally and lack access to the tools, knowledge, and systems needed to grow. The program provides structured, construction-focused support to help participants transition into stable, scalable, and growth-ready businesses.
LifeLine Global Consulting (LGC) serves as the Technical Assistance Operator for Ignite, supporting the design and delivery of the program through curriculum development, technical assistance delivery, and contractor support systems. This work is grounded in real-world construction business needs and focused on helping contractors formalize operations, strengthen business practices, and prepare for larger opportunities within Detroit’s construction ecosystem.

PROGRAM ARCHITECTURE
We designed Ignite as a three-level program that builds contractor capacity over time. Each level supports contractors in moving from informal operations to structured, growth-ready businesses through on-demand learning, individualized coaching, and signature events.
ELIGIBILITY-ALIGNED DESIGN
Ignite is built for contractors who are actively operating and earning. The program is intentionally designed to support construction businesses that are registered, established, and completing paid work—ensuring every session and resource is grounded in real-world business growth.
1:1 COACHING & GROUP COACHING SUPPORT
LifeLine Global Consulting provides a mix of structured learning and personalized coaching to support contractor development. Participants receive direct assistance with business planning and execution, including action planning, lean business planning, capability statements, and marketing content.
BUSINESS EDUCATION & LENDING CONNECTIONS
Ignite supports contractors by strengthening business fundamentals and improving financial readiness. Through the program, participants gain access to business education and connections that help them better understand capital pathways and lending opportunities.
OPERATIONAL SUPPORT FOR CONTRACTS & MAJOR PROJECTS
Ignite provides practical operational guidance to help contractors prepare for larger scopes of work. This includes support that strengthens systems, documentation, and readiness for contract opportunities in Detroit’s construction economy.
TRACKING & PROGRESS MONITORING
Our team supports onboarding, participation, and engagement at every level of the program—ensuring contractors receive consistent guidance as they progress through a structured growth pathway.
The Ignite Detroit Contractor's Experience
Ignite is designed as a progressive, level-based experience that supports contractors at different stages of business development. Rather than following a rigid track, contractors build capacity over time—strengthening systems, confidence, and readiness as their businesses grow.
The experience is grounded in the Level Up Principle: each level builds on the last, reinforcing learning through application, technical assistance, and ongoing support.
How Contractors Move Through Ignite
Level 1: On-Demand Learning
Contractors begin by establishing a strong foundation through orientation, educational modules, and mastery sessions. This level focuses on business structure, compliance, financial organization, and operational fundamentals, delivered in a flexible format designed for working contractors.
Level 2: One-on-One Coaching & Applied Support
As contractors progress, they receive individualized technical assistance focused on applying learning directly to their business. Support includes action planning, lean business planning, capability statements, and marketing content—helping contractors turn concepts into usable tools.
Level 3: Signature Events
At the final level, contractors engage in signature events designed to increase readiness for larger contracts and next-stage opportunities by connecting preparation to real-world application.
Monthly Group Coaching: Support at Every Level
In addition to level-specific activities, monthly group coaching sessions are available to contractors at all levels of Ignite. These sessions provide a consistent space for participants to:
- Ask questions and troubleshoot real-time business challenges
- Receive guidance from technical assistance staff
- Learn from shared problem-solving and common contractor experiences
Group coaching ensures that contractors are never navigating growth alone and can access support when issues arise—regardless of where they are in the Level Up process.
A Flexible, Contractor-Centered Design
Ignite is built to accommodate the realities of running a construction business. Programming is delivered through a mix of online and in-person engagement, and missed sessions can be made up during another cycle. All levels are designed to be completed within a 12-month period, maintaining momentum while allowing flexibility.
Through this structured yet adaptable approach, Ignite supports contractors in moving from informal operations to structured, growth-ready businesses—without skipping critical foundations.

While applications are accepted on a rolling basis, participants are onboarded during scheduled program cycles throughout the year. This approach provides contractors with flexibility while ensuring access to tailored technical assistance and a focused peer environment that encourages shared learning, accountability, and forward momentum.
